Is Friday the 13th As Unlucky as They Say?…

bad_luck-781031

Friday the 13th always brings such mixed feelings to everyone these days.  Is it an unlucky day? Is it a lucky day? Do I avoid mirrors and ladders and cats? Do I stay inside all day long and avoid anything that can bring bad luck???

Try this word on for size…Paraskevidekatriaphobics.  This is someone who is afraid of Friday the 13th and if you are one of these people, you should probably stop reading now or be forever afraid of this day of the week.

Friday has been considered an unlucky day for a long time.  Jesus was said to have been crucified on a Friday according to scripture and there is also “Black Friday” which has been associated with huge sales the day after Thanksgiving and also with stock market crashes and other disasters.

But what about the number 13?  Why is it considered such an unlucky number to some but a lucky number to others?

Some say that the number 13 was considered a lucky number by ancient China and Egypt.  Egyptians believed that the number 13 signified death but not in a bad way.  They believed in 12 stages of life and the 13th is death in a glorious transformation.

On the other side of the spectrum, Norse mythology believes that 13 people sitting and dining with eachother is bad luck and one will die within the next year.  Did you hear that there were 13 people sitting at the Last Supper with Jesus Christ? And he died on a Friday remember?…

It’s said not to change your sheets on your bed on Friday or it will bring bad dreams…

They say not to drive on Friday the 13th because studies show that there have been more accidents on that day…

Don’t start a trip on the unlucky day either…haven’t you heard the story of the H.M.S. Friday?

About a hundred years ago in Britain, Sailors who were afraid of setting sail on Fridays because it was considered unlucky were going to be shown that Friday was not an unlucky day and a special ship was commissioned called the H.M.S. Friday. They launched the ship on a Friday, chose the crew on a Friday, made her captain a man named Jim Friday and she set off on her maiden voyage on a, you guessed it, Friday.  The ship and her crew was never seen or heard from again

But bad luck is not for everyone. Take J.O. at Reach Magazine TV, who both agree that Friday the 13th is just another day.

“I don’t believe in luck,” says J.O., “There are blessings and divine instruments and there’s horseshoes and hand grenades.  I’ve walked across so many black cats and broken so many mirrors and nothing has happened yet.  I LOVE FRIDAY THE 13TH!”

Whether you have a bad outlook or a good one like J.O., remember that Friday the 13th is just another horror movie, just another day.

Here’s some interesting ideas on how to Beat Bad Luck on Friday the 13th.

Thoughts on true friendships

It’s a fact that Reach Magazine TV host Sherrie Marlene loves God and reads the bible on a daily basis.  Whenever she finds a scripture that really hits home, she wants to share it with her friends and family to bring a little light to someones day. Since all of you reading are her extended family she wanted to share a scripture that caught her eye.

Proverbs 27:6 “Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.”

“I feel it’s a person’s responsibility to be completely honest with a friend. A person should always have a friend’s best interest at heart, even if it causes an uncomfortable situation.  You never want to be the person who tells a friend what they want to hear (essentially lie to them) to avoid hurting their feelings, this could lead to potential disaster depending on the severity of the situation.  Remember, “An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips” (Proverbs 24:26). “A kiss on the lips” is a lot better than a slap on the face, which a lie tends to feel like!.” ~ Follow Sherrie Marlene on Twitter!

j-loveJ-Love’s Thoughts on Philippians 1:6

“It gives you the confidence to know that even when you fall short, when you make mistakes, when you don’t live up to what you feel the model is of perfection or being a good Christian quote on quote, you didn’t start the work. God started the work in your life, so he’s faithful to himself to finish it, so you’re ok, it’s a journey. Enjoy the ride.”
